How Medicare Advantage Plans Work
Medicare Advantage plans are offered through private insurers that follow Medicare’s rules. When you enroll, your Medicare services are managed by the plan provider. You may need to use doctors in the plan’s network, depending on the plan type (HMO, PPO, etc.).
Most plans include prescription drug coverage and offer a wide range of added benefits.Who Can Enroll?
You may qualify for Medicare Advantage if:
- You live in the plan’s service area
- You don’t have End-Stage Renal Disease (with some exceptions)
- You’re enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B
Enrollment periods include:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) – Around your 65th birthday
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) – October 15 to December 7
- Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) – Based on qualifying life events

Frequently Asked Questions
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 or older. It also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. It includes different parts (A, B, C, and D) that cover hospital stays, medical services, and prescription drugs.
Part D is the Medicare prescription drug plan. It helps cover the cost of medications. These plans are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare and can be added to Original Medicare or included in some Medicare Advantage plans.
Medigap plans help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. If you stay with Original Medicare, a Medigap plan can offer added financial protection.
You can enroll in Medicare during a 7-month window: three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your birthday, and three months after. You may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period in certain situations.
It depends on the type of plan you choose. Original Medicare is accepted by most doctors nationwide. For Medicare Advantage plans, you’ll need to check whether your preferred doctors are in-network with your selected plan.
Costs vary depending on the plan and coverage you choose. While Part A is usually premium-free, Part B has a monthly premium. Additional plans like Part D or Medicare Advantage may have their own costs.
It depends on your healthcare needs. Medicare Advantage plans often offer extra benefits and may lower out-of-pocket costs, but they may limit your choice of providers.
